Judging from the specifications of the hardware, they can be spelled out very able to run Android Ice Cream Sandwich, let alone the fact that the Nexus S made by Google which has the same specifications with the Galaxy S has been getting updates ICS.

From the Samsung they are not obligated to perform updates on the latest Android device has been sold since who would not add more revenue and will increase their expenditures for research & development.
However, if continued resort to the then Samsung will never get the loyalty of consumers and get fanatical mass (fanboy) like Apple have today.
