5 Threats to Health Workers "Shift" Night

Recently, various studies show there is a threat of health problems for those who are accustomed to working late into the evening or night shift had a turn. Medical evidence which strongly suggests that the irregular working hours can affect health in the long term.
Cameron Mustard, a health researcher and president of the Institute for Work and Health in Toronto, Canada, said, "While I was working shift, there is time to sleep. As a result, you will run into conflict with the biological clock."
Here are five of the risk of health problems that could be a threat, especially for those shift workers, as quoted besthealthmag:
1. Bedtime will be chaotic
About 10 percent of the people who run the shift work sleep problems, including insomnia, became very sleepy and have difficulty staying awake at work.
"Working shifts can be defined in a group that lack of sleep," said Dr. Charles Samuels, medical director of the Centre for Sleep and Human Performance, Calgary. Samuels added, shift workers will generally be more difficult to sleep during the daytime because it conflicted with the body's natural clock.
The fix: According to Samuel, sleep is a top priority. The loss of sleep when working night shift should be replaced with a sleep time during the day, no matter whether doing so will reduce your time with family. Make the bedroom quiet and dark and avoid exercise, caffeine, alcohol.
"People think they can lead a normal life if they do shift work, but in fact they will not be," said Samuels.
2. Adding weight
"When you work in shifts, your appetite to consume high-calorie foods tend to increase," said Dr. Samuels. This condition is in accordance with many studies associate lack of sleep with weight gain. Excess weight can lead to health problems, such as an increased risk for heart disease, diabetes, and cancer.
The fix: Bring your own food from home and avoid eating snacks on the roadside. Dr. Samuels said, combining caffeine with carbohydrate (such as muffins and coffee) can be bad because it can stimulate insulin spikes and cause weight gain.
3. Could be injured
According to Mustard, the risk of workplace accidents for those who work the night shift almost 50 percent higher than the normal worker.
The fix: Ask for help when you lift or do anything risky while working at night. Remember, when you feel very tired during work shifts, should be a time to take a break.
4. Risk for pregnancy problems
A study from Denmark found that those who work nights have a 85 percent risk of miscarriage is higher than normal workers. In fact, a study in 2010 in Italy showed an association between shift work and risk of premature birth and low birth weight infants.
The fix: If you are pregnant, consider the adequacy of sleep and your weight. Ask an expert if you do not get time to sleep or have trouble sleeping.
5. Higher cancer risk
According to data collected from the U.S. Nurses Health Study, which involved 240,000 nurses and observed for 30 years, showed that women who work the night shift for several years had a higher risk of breast cancer, colon, and endometrium. The researchers think it is related to melatonin levels.
The fix: If you work nights for several years, talk to your doctor about the possibility of taking melatonin supplements. These supplements tend to be safe, but quite complex and you need the guidance of an expert to use it.
